House Votes to Improve Elections Process, Protect Voter Rights

Tallahassee, Fla. – Florida House Majority Leader Carlos Lopez-Cantera (R-Miami) today issued the following statement regarding the Florida House passing CS/CS/HB 1355 Elections by Representative Baxley (R-Ocala).

“In a representative democracy, it is imperative that we continue to improve upon our elections process and optimize our citizens’ opportunity to make their voices heard. I commend Chair Baxley for producing a piece of legislation that will not only protect citizens’ voting rights but also increase voter access.

“This legislation reforms many areas of our elections system and increases accountability in Florida elections. It improves our voter registration system, ensuring applicants can easily update their information and additionally, cracks down on voter fraud by providing greater oversight and control of third-party voter registration organizations to stop voter abuse.

“Moreover, this reform increases voter access by further improving the ability of our absentee voters to receive ballots as soon as possible wherever they are in the state and provides them with information to make certain that their ballots will be counted.

“This bill ultimately protects the integrity of the elections process, and I look forward to this reform becoming law.
